Rick Santorum Clarifies Puerto Rico remarks

    Politico

Rick Santorum is working furiously to explain comments that appear to suggest the island must adopt English as its official language.

In an interview with El Vocero, a San Juan newspaper, Santorum said English would have to be the island’s “main language” if Puerto Rico becomes a U.S. state. The statehood issue is being considered by Puerto Ricans on the November ballot.

“As in any other state, you have to comply with this and any federal law. And that is that English has to be the main language. There are other states with more than one language, as is the case in Hawaii, but to be a state in the United States, English has to be the main language,” Santorum said told the local newspaper.
English and Spanish are both spoken in Puerto Rico, but Spanish is more common.
